Senior School Curriculum

In 2008, the school committed to a number of strategic initiatives which would continue to build Roedean’s considerable reputation as a centre of academic excellence. We are determined to create new horizons and exciting challenges for both girls and staff members which will equip them in the future to lead lives of significance.

All our Grade 8 (LVs) and Grade 9 (MVs) pupils have participated, in a cross-curricular programme, lasting for the best part of a week. During this time, they have been required to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired in many disciplines to solve, in a creative way, a real-world problem. By working together in small groups, the team-work skills of the girls have been developed and they have, in addition, been required to master some essential Information Technology skills. The tasks have been extremely successful in enhancing the academic experience of each girl and in developing critical skills which will be essential for success in the 21st century.

In a world where information is doubling in a remarkably short period of time, it is impossible to teach all the knowledge that will be required by future generations. It is therefore essential to equip pupils with skills that they will be able to employ throughout their lifetimes. To this end, we are in the process of implementing a carefully designed programme which will teach critical and creative thinking skills from Grade 0 to Grade 12.

Yet another aspect of our strategic plan will enable us, as a community, to develop key partnerships with other communities, to help build the skills of the future generations of our young leaders. Our areas of focus are Mathematics and the Sciences. It is the vision of Roedean to establish departments that will link with both national and international imperatives of Mathematics and Sciences teaching and learning. It is our intention to generate skills and excellence, in both Mathematics and th e Sciences, involving girls and staff at the school and at carefully selected partner schools. The model would serve to:

  • develop critical curriculum resource material
  • promote collaborative expert knowledge workshops
  • create exciting opportunities for the ongoing development of the integration of Information Technology in producing lessons for distribution through various media
  • provide opportunities for the development of teacher training in Mathematics and the Sciences.

While our strategic initiative focuses on Mathematics and the Sciences, we have vibrant and most successful Arts and Culture departments (Dramatic Arts, Visual Arts and Music) whose pupils achieve an exceptional standard of work. These subjects are highly valued at Roedean and the role that they play in enhancing creativity amongst our pupils is considered to be critical.

In Grades 8 and 9

(LV and MV), the pupils follow a broad, general curriculum, studying a wide range of subjects. They master some of the basic skills required for each discipline and cover sufficient material to give them an understanding of the demands of each subject.

We follow the curriculum as laid down in the National Curriculum Statements and our Grade 12 pupils write the IEB National Senior Certificate (NSC). In order to qualify for the NSC, each pupil must offer a minimum of 7 subjects.

Grade 10 to 12

At the end of their Grade 9 (MV) year, girls must select those subjects which they will study during the FET phase (Grades 10 – 12) of their school careers. They are given considerable support in making this decision. See Career Guidance. On two separate evenings during the year, all Grade 9 (MV) girls and their parents are invited to attend Subject Choice meetings. At these meetings, they are provided with information about:

  • the requirements of the National Senior Certificate
  • enrolment into tertiary institutions
  • the process of subject choice
  • specific requirements of and strengths of each subject offered at Roedean.

There are 4 compulsory subjects:

  • English Home Language
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • South African First Additional Language (Afrikaans, isiZulu or Sesotho)
  • Life Orientation.

Each pupil must choose at least 3 other subjects from the wide range on offer, including:

  • Accounting
  • Advanced Programme Mathematics
  • Dramatic Arts, Design
  • French
  • Geography
  • German
  • History
  • Information Technology
  • Italian
  • Life Sciences
  • Music
  • Physical Sciences
  • Spanish
  • Visual Arts

Girls are encouraged to engage in conversations with their subject teachers who provide guidance as to appropriate subject choices. Further support is offered during Life Orientation lessons. Roedean School Johannesburg Subjects Offered
