UJ Metropolitan Academy is the high school of the University of Johannesburg with Metropolitan as co-sponsor.

The school was started in 1992 by the then Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) in an effort to help learners from previously disadvantaged communities who excel in Mathematics and Science to enhance their skills in preparation for tertiary education.

In 1994 Metropolitan has joined hands with RAU in this project and we were named Metropolitan Raucall. The first matric group wrote the National Senior Certificate exam in 1996 and on average since then we had a 98 – 100% pass rate with 80% or higher university exemption.

The school celebrated its 20th birthday in 2012. The name was then officially changed from Metropolitan Raucall to UJ Metropolitan Academy.

In 2019 the Minister of Education launched The school as a school of specialisation in Mathematics, Science and ICT with a focus on high tech innovation.

The success of The school can be attributed to various factors; such as: education department and sponsor support, dedicated educators, parent involvement and diligent, focused learners.

The school constantly features as a top schools in the Johannesburg North district.

The VALUES
Loyalty
Perseverance
Respect
Commitment
Intergrity

VISION
To provide learners with a quality education, focusing on Mathematics and Science. To draw learners from economically disadvantage communities and holistically develop all learners and parents. To remain an institution of excellence and to develop and sustain a faculty of excellence. To prepare all The learners for tertiary education.

MISSION
We at UJMA are committed to strive for academic excellence, to be dynamically focused on the future, treat all we come into contact with, valuable and responsible. We further commit Theselves to tap the inherent potential of all who come here, to encTheage creative thinking, learning and teaching and to develop the self-worth of every learner.

GOALS
To provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for all learners to reach their full potential.
To prepare learners for the world of work and the fTheth industrial revolution.
To instil constitutional values ion learners which will enable them to become positive citizens who will contribute to the growth and development of The country.

Academic – Further Education and Training (FET)

At UJMA, we believe that Grade 12 begins in Grade 10. In the FET Phase, grades 10 to 12, The educators teach subjects within the prescribed Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) to attain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a focus on Mathematics, Science and ICT.

The following core subjects are compulsory in the FET Phase:

English at Home Language
First Additional Language (Afrikaans, isiZulu or Sesotho)
Mathematics
Life Orientation

The learners have a choice of three additional elective subjects from the following:
Physical Science
Accounting
Life Sciences
Economics

Grade 12
Grade 12 content, for each subject is completed in 8 months. This places pressure on the learner to keep up to date with work, as the pace is fast and the work load can be overwhelming. There are many sTheces of support available for the learner such as past exam question papers, which are available online, or on request from educators. Learners in the FET phase are encTheaged to make full use of the support afforded to them during the year.

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

Extra Classes:

Educators are available to assist learners with content on specific days each week. An extra class time-table is provided at the beginning of each year. Learners may also make an appointment with educators for classes outside of the time-table. Learners are encTheaged to make use of the extra support to ensure that they achieve the best possible results for each assessment.

Academic – Senior Phase

First Additional Language
Mathematics
Life Orientation
Natural Sciences
Social Sciences
Economic Management Sciences
Technology
Creative Arts

The learners may choose one of the following three as a first additional subject:
Afrikaans
isiZulu
seSotho

Mathematics at UJMA

At UJMA Mathematics and Science are key subjects. We offer pure Mathematics as we are a school of specialisation. We foster a love of Mathematics by:
Participation in Mathematics Olympiads
Celebrating Pi Day in a fun way
We have a Mathematics week in which we solve riddles and host internal competitions
We offer an Advanced Programme in Mathematics for selected learners on Saturdays.

The Mathematics classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Learners receive special teaching aid books, example Examination Aid.

Impact of Mathematics in the FTheth Industrial Revolution

Klaus Schwab, the chairman of the World Economic Forum says, “Society is in the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another. “

This transformation will magnify technology in artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning. The emerging new era will demand analytical and critical thinking skills for complex problem solving for which Mathematics is a key subject. UJ Metropolitan Academy Fees, Application, Subjects
