Most of the Government Departments offer students opportunities for bursaries and Government Learnerships. The development of the youth will assist in stabilizing the economy while aiding in delivering a skilled workforce within the country.
Their learnership programs encourage unemployed, educated students the chance to build on their experience and skills. Most of the internships provided are for a duration of 12 months or longer. They do not usually include accommodation or transport, but will give learners a monthly stipend. Candidates are, however, urged to apply with Government Departments in their Provinces.
The learnership programs provide practical, as well as theoretical experience for successful candidates. These programs are based on the scarce skills shortages within South Africa. With the completion of their learnerships, some candidates may be offered a permanent position, where others will be skilled and experienced enough to enter the workforce, in other sectors of the country.

Department of Arts and Culture Learnerships: The Department of Arts and Culture Programme is responsible for the development and promotion of arts, culture and language.
Department of Basic Education Learnerships: The South Africa Department of Basic Education is committed to providing equal opportunities and practising affirmative action employment. Civilian Secretariat for Police Service Learnerships: The Civilian Secretariat for Police (‘the Civilian Secretariat’) serves as technical advisor to the Minister of Police (‘the Minister’) to evince a transversal civilian oversight capability on the governance, service delivery and resourcing of the South African Police Service (‘the Police Service’)
Department of Communications Learnerships: Through the TVET colleges, the Department of Communications are giving young people the opportunity to reskill themselves and receive practical experience for life at work.
Department of Correctional Services Learnerships: The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is looking for persons from various communities, interests and with appropriate qualifications to enter into Further Education and Training Certificate in the Corrections Services Learnership.
Department of Defence Learnerships in South Africa: The Department of Defence is a department of the South African government. It oversees the South African National Defence Force, the armed forces responsible for defending South Africa.

Department of Public Works and Infrastructure Learnerships: It is responsible for providing accommodation and property management services to all the other ministries of the South African government. It is also responsible for promoting the national Expanded Public Works Programme and for encouraging the transformation of the construction and property industries in South Africa

Requirements
Candidates must usually be between the ages of 18 and 35 years of age, depending on the Department they apply to.? Candidates must include a detailed curriculum vitae with contact details, contactable references as well as any information they feel may be pertinent to their application.? Please also include certified copies of all relevant certificates, ID, and proof of address no older than three months.? Candidates must be permanent South African residents and citizens. Candidates are usually only allowed to do one learnership, through one of the Departments. Candidates with disabilities are welcome to apply to all Departments of Government.
Candidates will also require to the following:
- Matric / Grade 12
- English – read, write and speak
- Proficiency in one other National Language
- All candidates must be Computer literate
- Candidates must not have a permanent employment
- Be self-motivated and a team player
- Flexibility with a commitment to learn, but moreover willingness to work
- All candidates must be able to work under pressure
- Candidates must be innovative, professional, honest, ethical and a great listener
Application Process
Learnerships online applications processes are made available during the year, depending on the Department.? Some of these learnership application forms can only be collected at the Departments involved. Most of the Government learnerships will be processed on a Z83 application form. This form must be accompanied by all relevant documentation.
Candidates must ensure that they complete the application form fully and sign it before sending it in. Any forms that are missing information, a signature, a date or documentation, will be disqualified. Any late entries will not be looked at. Qualifications and details will be verified. Successful candidates will be contacted and an interview arranged. If you have not heard anything within 3 weeks to 3 months after closing dates, you can assume your application was unsuccessful. Applications that are faxed or e-mailed will not be considered.
